Mystic Poetry & Calligraphy
Moshir Safavi
Designer, Calligrapher
Moshir is my husband and the magical hands behind the beautiful calligraphy that adorn YFarmani jewelry!
Moshir writes the poetry using ancient tools like bamboo calligraphy sticks called qalam and ink, as well as modern contemporary techniques with chiseled tip markers.
Moshir’s first encounter with calligraphy was as a school boy in Iran, where he was born and raised. In middle school he taught himself Nastaliq using markers. Calligraphy soon became a form of self-expression, and he has been fascinated with the dance and flow of letters and words ever since. He has also recently become interested in merging Western and Persian calligraphy.
Together, we select mystical poems from ancient Persian poets
The reason why we love their poetry is beyond the fact that we grew up with it and it’s embedded in our culture.
Ancient mystic Persian poems by luminaries like Rumi, Hafiz, Khayam, and Sa'adi, transcend time and culture with their profound wisdom and timeless beauty.
Their verses, steeped in spirituality and love, point us to our inner light and the truth. They nurture our soul. With their poems, they weave intricate tapestries of human experience, inviting us to embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual awakening. This is where true self-love begins.
Here are a few poems in the “Mystic Love” collection:
Rumi:
در هوایت بی قرارم، روز و شب
Dar ha-vaa-yat bee gha-raa-ram rooz-o shab
In thoughts of you I am restless, day and night
This is a poem about true love. A spiritual experience in which you discover the truth beyond words, and an encounter with a higher power that lies within you and the other.
Sa’adi:
بنی آدم اعضای یکدیگرند، که در آفرینش ز یک گهرند
Bani Aa-dam A-za-yeh yek dee-ga-rand,
Keh dar aa-fa-ree-nesh zeh yek go-ha-rand
Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul
We use the first verse of the poem by Sa’adi. This poem is inscribed on the entrance of the United Nations building. It speaks of our oneness and connection, which is why
we love it so much.
Khayyam:
[هر طایفهای به من گمانی دارد]
من زآن خودم چنان که هستم، هستم
Man za-neh kho-dam che-naan keh has-tam, has-tam.
I remain as I am [regardless of people’s assumptions about me]
A poem that reminds us to stay grounded in ourselves, to love ourselves and be who we are unapologetically!
